![]() The only way to fail events in PXZ2 is if everyone on your side gets wiped out as there are no other objectives to be found like trying to escape if odds get too great. ![]() The tactical part is that your enemies benefit from this system as well so planning is everything to make sure you stay alive. Project X Zone 2 does takes some cues from some sRPG titles including giving your Pair Units an slight increase in damage if you attack them from the side or a substantial one if done from behind. I got to admit that despite the actual technical aspect of the fighting it’s awesome to see you favorite characters laying the smack down on the bad guys with glorious combos. ![]() Visually I felt like I was playing a fighter calling in tag-team characters to assist me from time to time during these moments instead of the precise acts of chaining together attacks in an almost turn based setting to pull off the most damage possible. If unsuccessful you will have to either use another ally character on the field or wait for the next Player Turn segment. Players will execute moves by inputting the desired attack and over the course of three attacks attempt to defeat their opponent. Instead of just attacking foes right on the battle map things switch from the Stage Map to the Battle Screen where things get interesting. Players then usually have the option to counter or defend an enemy force unless it’s a major foe. Once every one of your allies has been used your end your turn and the enemies get their turn. Much like every strategy RPG players you start out on an isometric battle field where you must move your characters strategically towards your enemy so you can attack them. The combat as I mentioned was not what I expected at all and surprisingly I found it to be fresh and exciting. It was quite entertaining to see how Phoenix Wright and a medium would actually fair in a game involving combat but the developers put a lot of thought into making it work. Project X Zone 2’s story revolves around supernatural events where multiple different times and worlds being linked to one another via portals somehow makes just enough sense to be enjoyable. These folks are not alone either as several Solo Units will join up in interesting combinations like lawyer Phoenix Wright and Maya Fey being support for Darkstalkers’ badasses Dmitri Maximoff and Morrigan Aesland. ![]() Warning there are lots of ninjas in this game! Characters are usually paired up in units from their respective games like Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine from Resident Evil or similarly themed characters like ninjas Strider Hiryu and Hotsuma from Strider and Shinobi respectively in combat. Project X Zone 2 brings some of the biggest names from Bandai Namco Entertainment, Capcom and Sega franchises to grace a screen at the same time with a few newcomers from Nintendo’s more interesting franchises this time around. They kick it off with returning protagonists Reiji Arisu and his 765 year old “Sage Fox” partner Xiaomu hitting the streets of sealed off Shibuya where mysterious golden chains start showing up as well as various characters across time and series. This third entry (second in PXZ series) starts off introducing players to a never-ending fight between rival good and evil groups Shinra (no not that one) and Ouma. While I never played the original Project X Zone, it would seem that I would have to time travel all the way back to the PS2 era and boarded a plane to Japan to play Namco X Capcom, the actual first game in this series. Two words to describe Project X Zone 2 though would be “Addictive Crossover”. I was expecting something more Disgaea in nature, but what I found was a cross between Disgaea and the likes of Street Fighter, Darkstalkers and Tekken and that’s not even quite right as a descriptor. I’ll be honest, when I first took on Project X Zone 2 to review for 3DS this wasn’t the strategy RPG I thought it would be. There’s so much good to see and hear in Minute of Islands, but unfortunately the gameplay did absolutely nothing for me. I almost feel guilty writing this review. But if you want me to appreciate your art, my interaction with it needs to be an enjoyable experience for me. Minute of Islands constantly screams, “Look at me! I’m artsy!” I’m all for art, don’t get me wrong. I understand that the developers had a story they really wanted to tell here, but the lack of enjoyment in between really made it difficult for me to care about Mo, her family, or the world in which they inhabit. The game is advertised as a puzzle-platformer, but only one puzzle in the entire game asked me to do anything more than “press button(s) to activate.” Furthermore, I was forced to backtrack through levels for no other reason than to pad some extra time in the game. There has been so much love and attention put on making the player look at the scenery, but they forgot to make the game “fun.” The platforming is primitive at best and merely serves as a way to make this story interactive. My issue here, however, is the primary focus on the art over the gameplay. Even though the game doesn’t strive for realism visually, every step, every squawk from a seagull, and every slithering tentacle matches perfectly with its on-screen counterpart. The game encourages you to use headphones, and I heartily agree. It works for the mentioned tone that the game is going for.Īdditionally, the sound design here is exquisite. The world around Mo looks like an animated version of a teenager’s highly-detailed doodles in a school notebook. When I describe the rest of the environments to you, it’s going to sound like I’m mocking them, but I mean this in the best way possible. This title obviously takes a much more serious approach, however. Minute of Islands‘ character art style is very reminiscent of animated television shows like Adventure Time and Rick and Morty. Her delivery, combined with the rest of the art style, sets the tone to a high level. The story is narrated by Megan Gay, whose soothing tones reminded me of a female Liam Neeson. The fantasy element plays quite well here, even if its layered on a bit thick. I quite enjoyed the overall premise at play in Minute of Islands. This offers some additional dramatic story elements. Along the way, you’ll run into your own estranged family members who have stayed behind amidst impending doom. You must guide Mo through several two-dimensional labyrinths in an attempt to jump start each of the four brothers. Without their efforts, the world is slowly consumed by spores. ![]() Four gargantuan brothers, forced to keep the planet alive by toiling underground for all eternity, have basically broken, all at the same time. But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t relieved when I finally rolled credits after eight hours in this world. That’s not to say there isn’t plenty of good buried in this indie title. Minute of Islands from Studio Fizbin isn’t a game that I would recommend for those that value enjoyable gameplay over art. I’m not in the business of stomping over anyone’s hard work, but I have to be honest. I’ve never developed a single line of code for any game, so I have almost no idea of the the struggle it takes to put your art into a title. ![]() One of my least favorite things to do is write a review for a game that isn’t for me.
